Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in Ottawa, Canada where my family still resides, including my parents, siblings, and two lively nephews. I worked as a Backcountry Guide all across Canada with the Tim Horton Children's Foundation, leading adventurous 7-day hikes and canoeing trips with youth. After five years living just outside of Banff, I decided to make the leap to New Zealand, just before Covid struck. When I'm not at work, you'll find me soaking up the beauty of Queenstown's great outdoors, whether it's exploring trails on foot or on my bike.
What does your typical day at Millbrook look like?
A typical day at Millbrook sees me wearing multiple hats.
On membership days, I handle membership inquiries, welcome members to the club day events, plan activities, liaise with sponsors, and take minutes during committee meetings. I also give tours to new or interested members, showcasing all that Millbrook has to offer.
In my Golf Reservations role, I manage emails and ensure smooth booking processes. This includes organising groups, setting up competitions, and coordinating refreshments for tournaments.
Lastly, in the Golf Shop, I work with a fantastic team, welcoming and assisting golfers with check-ins and equipment before they begin their round of golf.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is the incredible team I work with. In the Golf Shop, we have a low turnover rate, and our team operates like a close-knit family. One of the things I appreciate most is the emphasis our managers place on achieving a healthy work-life balance, along with the various social team activities we engage in.
I thoroughly enjoy the social aspect of the job and the opportunity to connect with numerous individuals, particularly our members. Despite living far from home, there are members who extend genuine warmth and hospitality, making me feel like part of the family.
What is it that makes Millbrook so special?
What makes Millbrook stand out is its awesome staff. We've got people from all over, and if you take the time to chat (which can be tough with 250+ folks), you'll hear some incredible stories and learn a lot about everyone's lives and adventures. Since most of us are far from home, there's this feeling of kindness and openness that makes the atmosphere super friendly. I also enjoy the amount of workshops that are put on by management. There are always opportunities to educate yourself and learn on a lot of different topics!
What is the best advice you've ever been given?
Might not be word for word but roughly: "If you don't treat yourself with respect, don't expect others to treat you any differently." It all begins with how you value and regard yourself. When you show yourself kindness, respect, and appreciation, others are more likely to follow suit. You set the standard for how others should treat you by how you treat yourself. So, prioritise self-respect and self-worth—it's the foundation for earning respect from others. I truly believe I expanded on this concept through my experiences in the backcountry. When you're out there, you're in charge, with no one else to rely on, and you have eight other young individuals looking up to you to lead the way. It's a profound lesson in self-reliance and self-respect, knowing that how you carry yourself directly influences others' perceptions and actions.
